A young and ambitious SVA grad, Panayiotis Terzis weaves psychadelic  journeys into nether worlds only he knows. Having lived in Providence for four years in the aftermath of Fort Thunder, I am instinctually suspicious of work like Terzais’. Yet, there is an added polish and possible drawing from deeper narratives that compels me. I am interested to see what else comes from the young artist.

Mr. Zawada caught some major internet buzz when he art directed this cute little video (Softlies – Heart Made of Sound). But his portfolio has a much wider breath. Doing some fantastic work for Aussies like the Presets, Modular, and the Frenchies Sixpack. The man has the kangaroos on lock down.

Fun, cheeky, a bit racy, and smart graphic design from recent Prattster Alex Witjas. I am thoroughly excited by the work coming out of there. Keep it up brave young ones!

A peculiar name for a peculiar man. Matthew‘s illustration style is quirky, light-hearted, and down right fun. At first, I did not believe this young man was from the British Isles, but then I thought of my old pal Roald and smirked.

Ms. Thompson pleasantly reminds me that I own a pair of scissors and a untended stack of old magazines. Cutup culture is alive over at Michelle’s studio.

A dear friend at Paperwhite turned me on to the plain beauty of Rachel Bone. I had sort of forgotten about the whole Marcel Dzama aesthetic, but this warm reminder. Not to say that Bone isn’t doing her own thing. The simplicity in her work serves an important purpose to her subjects.

Our very own Sarah Knotz has revamped her portfolio! Her new site reflects the new directions she’s taken, transitioning from strict graphic design into illustration. You can still feel her design sensibilities in the beautiful details sprinkled throughout the site, (I’m especially enjoying the numbers and titles.) Michigan bred, Boston educated, and San Francisco based artist Alexis Anne Mackenzie crafts wonderful collages. See if you can read them. Some of you SF cats might’ve caught her work at Park Life. Her spartan website has a good sampling of work, but her flickr is also a great source to peep.

Every once in a while you come upon a designers work who stumps you. Like a soft bump in the road, the work scratches your head in a pleasant moment of contemplation. Is this work art? Is it design? Is it good? Is it too naive? Whatever your judgment may be Aya Yamasaki‘s work it is slowly making me smile. Without question her simple aesthetic is a style. What that style says or reveals is open for interpretation. Her work reminds me of the softly mysterious approach of Cosmic Wonder, Here and There magazine, and the work of Kazunari Hattori.

This well traveled designer of Tokyo-birth now hails from Chicago where she quietly crafts design for the local art scene establishments such as Golden Age and Drag City Records. She also publishes Cough Drop Magazine with two other international collaborators, (Kew-Yearn Chung and Lotta-lina Salonen). If anyone can track down a copy please do let me know.

A good friend of mine reminded me of a genius today. Charlie Harper‘s work is phenomenally humble and unique. His masterful style was so related to how he viewed the world. Discover his work over and over again. Todd Oldham also published a book on his work a few years back.

I regard the picture as an ecosystem in which all the elements are interrelated, interdependent, perfectly balanced, without trimming or unutilized parts; and herein lies the lure of painting; in a world of chaos, the picture is one small rectangle in which the artist can create an ordered universe. - Charley Harper

Normal Bias is an “experimental art & design house” that bypasses ” superfluous trend in favour of ideas with integrity and craft.” Those are bold words, but these guys stay true. Check out their work. I really would like to get my hands on some of those Bearded pages.

Three young swiss lads who bring wit, humor, and fun back to graphic design. Their combined efforts really show design that’s more of an approach than techniques or style. Being a group they can exercise their skills across a variety of media (illustration, photography, video direction, etc…) Three heads must definitely be better than one. Check out this amazing video that already got a lot of blog love.

I was flipping through an old issue of High Fructose and came across what I thought to be a collection of manipulated photos. To my amazement they were the paintings of dutch artist Chris Berens. This “gaussian blur-like” effect seen in most of his works has evolved due to his tedious process. Beren’s works with inks on high gloss ink jet paper covered in a plastic coating, he then peels off the plastic, layers 10-15 of them onto top of each other, and then glues them onto wood panel. Inspirational work. Check it.

Komboh is the combined creative collective of Hans B. Thiessen and Michael W. Matekyo. Hailing from Alberta, CA the two have much talent. I appreciate how each member contributes in their own way, but still come together in a harmonious balance. TEAM. Their youthful enthusiasm in their own brand materials is inspirational as well.

John Malloy is a Baltimore-based illustrator who has worked for Lemon Magazine, Slash Magazine, Dazed and Confused, and many others. He’s also a comic-book artist with several titles under his belt. I’m thoroughly enjoying the visual explorations he’s doing with his One Out of a Hundred series, (currently he’s posted 7 out of them.) Check this man’s work out before he moves out to the country to live with bears.

For all of you attic illustrators masked as designers, I present to you Jun Oson. This 30 year old Japanese illustrator studied Industrial design, began work as a designer and then decided illustration was more his thing, (much like our fellow Hugger Sarah Knotz.) I thank him for jumping ship, because Oson creates a vivid world inspired by comics, newspaper dailies, and rock n’ roll nostalgia. He has worked with 2k Shirts, Shift, and Supernova! Magazine just to name a few of his clients.

What drew me in about Jun Oson’s characters were their glass eyes. His work has a graphic simplicity that shows the editing hand of a designer. The 90 Heroes project reminds me of those raining afternoons drawing baseball cards of my imaginary friends, (don’t tell you didn’t do the same thing!) They also make for some great halloween costume inspiration. I look forward to seeing more work from this fellow.

Sanghon Kim is a Korean illustrator / graphic designer who’s done work for people like AIR, Hermes, Lacoste, and Tate Modern. Having studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, Kim definitely has a ‘french-touch’ that is lavish, but restrained. His real talent lies in his versatility. He easily transitions from illustrative painting, to photo montage, to stark graphic line-work. Some of his recent work for the Institubes Record Label exhibits a cartoon sensibility similar to Lee Dongi’s paintings. He recently participated in the highly publicized ‘The Art of Music‘ show alongside other talents like So-Me, Ryan Waller, and Josh Petherick. This show that was organized by the acclaimed ILL studio exhibited young artists who mainly work in the music business. I think many will agree that Kim’s work really stands out in a group who rely heavily on graphic colors, hand-drawn type, and decorative compositions. There is not a wealth of information about this young man, so if anyone else knows more — please let me know.
