Whilst flicking through this month’s Artichoke, I came across an article about this interesting new-age artist of all mediums – Dan Hill. The work which was featured in the article – not shown here, but a series of photographic juxtapositions; aesthetically not too far removed from tDr’s ‘Impossible Architecture’ series a few years back, prompted me to dig deeper. Although relatively little can be found about him (for instance, a folio site of sorts) I have discovered he is first and foremost a practicing architect and has been working at the forefront of innovative information and communication technologies (ICT) since the early ‘90s and responsible for many innovative, popular and critically acclaimed products and services. Dan’s blog, CityofSound, features a Graphic Design’ section amongst other things and is definitely worth a look – if only to see how such a mulit-talented artist is applying is own unique take on the profession. It’s predominantly experimental work, but refreshing none the less.

Had the pleasure of visiting this building the other day. It is truly spectacular and worth a visit if you are ever in New York. The Ford Foundation building is a shining star of Modernism, with a hint of green and even more, a nod towards a little life and breathing room. Hereís a nice write up from Metropolis Magazine forwarded to me by Anh Tuan. Have a look see. Amazing.

Take a look inside the world of the most popular social media companies. They sure seem to be having lots of fun! Here’s a photo of Twitter’s new office space in San Francisco.
It’s pretty awesome to see that these offices aren’t just grey and boring cubicles. I feel like the design of these spaces encourages the brilliant computer scientists to feel super awesome and hip. Just like the Intel ad…I see a possible trend of smart people having rock star status (of which they deserve).

I was lucky enough to be at the Design Museum London last night for the launch of the latest exhibition featuring legendary Dieter Rams. Simply one of the most influential designers of the late 20 century. The exhibition has been beautifully put together by Bibliotheque. And a must if your in London in the coming weeks. A big thanks.

This is a beautiful “sportdome” designed by Willem van der Sluis for imprisoned illegal immigrants in the Netherlands. This is definitely a successful project that shows that form and function play equal importance in design. “The mission was to create an outdoor space for the prisoners at the prison boats in Zaandam. The creating of the dome was a process of finding a solution between the demands of justice and living up to the needs of the prisoners. The space had to be easily built and easily dismantle, prisoners had to be able to see the outside world but it had to be sure that outsiders wouldnít recognize the prisonerís.” b
At night, the dome lights up and acts as a landmark that reminds us of social issues that need to be acknowledged.
You can watch an interview of him here and other fascinating dutch designers here.
