Designing with a specific style

joshuadavis

I haven’t been to Joshua Davis’ website in a while, but it seems like he’s got a whole lot of new projects up. It’s pretty fascinating to see how Joshua has built a brand based on his signature design look. You can find his patterns all over consumer products and fine art pieces (trash cans, shoes, pillows, vases, notebooks, backpacks, and now even iphone apps). It’s obvious he has a very specific design style. So, do you guys think that’s good or bad? Is it possible to grow and evolve yet be in our comfort zone?

I think he has been very smart about the way he has constructed his career. There are a lot of naysayers and critics about the way he has handled things. But he has crafted a way to live pretty much clientless and produce the type of work he is very happy making. I am more envious than critical at this point in time.

You bring up a good point! He’s been at this for years now, yet he’s still able to do what he loves with clients that he hand picks. Who else can we say has been able to do the same? Can’t think of any off the top of my head.
