Wee See

Recently, I had the great pleasure of meeting Rolyn Barthelman, a talented art director over at Comedy Central. In addition to his day job at CC, Rolyn has dedicated the last few months (if not the last year) to an inspiring and heart felt project called Wee See. Geared towards newborns, Wee See is a set of DVD’s that combines black and white shapes with magical sound.

“Part art installation, part pacifier, Wee See is a collection of black-and-white animations built from basic shapes to delight both child and parent. As vision develops slowly over the first months of life, Wee See provides surfaces of bold, well-defined artwork to engage your babyís curious mind and bring the screen to vibrant life.”

Inspired by his new baby and the new role of parent, Rolyn recognized a disconnect between what a newborn can comprehend and the educational DVD’s available for that age group. He also noticed that few (if any) of the available videos considered the enjoyment of the parent, because after all, they are watching these vids too.

Wee See is a collection of two DVD’s, conceptualized, designed and animated by Rolyn Barthelman, with music by Tim DeLaughter of The Polyphonic Spree. You can buy the DVD’s here (I mean, what a great gift for your expecting friends, or yourself for that matter). Wee See has also recently been picked up by the MOMA which is super badass. Enjoy!

Yeah, this is a great idea. I do not know all the goodies available for kids these days. But I’m guessing its not always designed. I do wonder though if there is an effect on a childs upbringing to be exposed to such things earlier than later? Nice…
