I Could Tell You But Then You Would Have to be Destroyed by Me: Emblems from the Pentagon’s Black World

Since I was a child I’ve always been into military stuff. Everything from the vehicles to combat strategy. I suppose it’s spending way too much time playing with my GI Joe’s. I wanted to share with you a book I picked up a while ago called, “I Could Tell You But Then You Would Have to be Destroyed by Me: Emblems from the Pentagon’s Black World.” This book looks into the history, iconography and military language of black ops project patches. I believe that many times commercial designers can overlook languages and systems that exist not only in pop culture, but in the military among other sources. This book provides an interesting perspective on hidden meanings and language. Direct, indirect and subversive iconography are also explored to distinguish different units and projects. It can be purchased here or at your local book store. I highly recommend picking this book up. It’s quite an interesting read. There is also a great article that was written in the NY Times. Enjoy.

Interesting post Patrick – I too spent way too much time dolling up my figure collection as a nipper. Please accept my virtual secret handshake!
