Had the pleasure of seeing this installation at the 303 Gallery on 21st st. here in New York. Yes, as withSarah’s post, I wondered whether this was fitting material or not, but as stated earlier as well, it communicated with me, so I thought I would share it. It is an interesting installation consisting of three projection screens sitting on what appear to be replicas of billboards. On each of these screens is the same movie, I suppose, prompting viewers to take multiple positions throughout the room. There are no seats. There are no benches. One decides purely what to do. And the movies, this is what gets me, are pretty amazing. A true mix of tranquility and chaos, these movies captured me if for a moment that lead to 30 minutes sitting there. And I can safely say, I potentially could have sat there for a few more hours. And rare is the installation that can do so. But it has happened before. But I was intrigued by the movies themselves. Depicting migrating animals, occupying sparse, almost minimalist middle America motel rooms, it is a captivating contradiction. I guess the premise is that of migratory animals, occupying spaces of typical human migration. But the depiction of the hotel rooms in and of itself is a thing of beauty. The way it is shot, the hues, the composition, the restraint and reduction, and the moments of pure chaos, supplied by the only natural entities in those rooms, is pretty mind blowing. I really dig it. It reminds me actually, perhaps of what shape the work of Saville might have taken rendered in motion. Enough restraint to let the mind wander, and enough of a sway to divvy up his vision. Now, I’ll recommend this to all who may have the time and want to check out such things but I do realize, it may not be everybody’s cup of tea. But for those that enjoy to get lost in a little sparse with a dash of turmoil, I highly recommend it. Really, beautiful work. I have been reading now, that Doug had an installation last year, and that this one, ‘Migration’, is part of a trilogy. I am now more than curious to see the rest. 303 Gallery
